Yesterday, we drove carts through an entire 18-hole golf course and didn’t have to stop once to look for a lost ball. Only because we didn’t hit any.

Steve and I volunteered as drivers as we toured Quarry Oaks Golf Course with residents and families impacted by Alzheimer's.

Not this time, anyway. This time, we didn’t have to tee off once. My sister, Laura, works for a memory care residence called CountryHouse and she invited us to volunteer for one of their autumn outings. Every October, she arranges an event at Quarry Oaks Golf Club where residents and families impacted by Alzheimer’s can gather to enjoy the fresh, fall air and the beautiful scenery.

She said this annual event started about 10 years ago and that the idea came when she and her now, husband Joedy, were looking for things to do on an inexpensive date. They rented a golf cart one fall evening and just rode around on the course with some hot chocolate and had an amazing time.

Ever since then, she’d asked for volunteers to drive CountryHouse residents around the course, and we were happy to help out. We also brought along our friend, Mikey from St. Kitts in the Caribbean, as he’d never been there and was up for a new adventure.

Our friend, Mikey Tross, joined us as a volunteer driver.

Each of us drove a golf cart and followed along in a line of more than 30 pairs as we drove the cart path that follows each of the 18 holes on this 7,010-yard course.

It was just beautiful! The trees here in Nebraska are just beginning to turn colors and some leaves have already started falling to the ground. The course was in amazing condition for this time of year with green fairways and nicely manicured putting greens.

Golf Digest rated Quarry Oaks the #1 Public Golf Course in Nebraska and we know why. With plentiful native grasses and trees as well as natural rolling hills, this course is not only great to play, it also made for a spectacular view.

As the colors here in Nebraska begin to change, this is a great time of year to wrap yourself up in a blanket, pour a warm beverage, and drive the course — even if you’re not a golfer.

Quarry Oaks Golf Club is at 16600 Quarry Oaks Drive near Ashland, Nebraska. Cost for a touring cart is about $20. For more information, contact the Pro Shop at 402.944.6000.
