A postcard from the Outer Banks

A postcard from the Outer Banks

During these cold winter days in Nebraska, it’s fun to dream about walking along a sandy beach, taking in the sun rays, and swimming in the ocean. While it’s pretty cold there now, the Outer Banks of North Carolina look like a great place to relax near the water during the summer months.

Last August, three ladies from our church traveled from Nebraska to North Carolina to visit some friends. Phyllis, Pam, and Brenda met up with Wanda (and her husband, Jim) and had a great time exploring the Outer Banks and catching up.

They spent time at the beach, enjoyed the beautiful sunrises, and explored local lighthouses. They also enjoyed visiting Kitty Hawk and Wright Brothers National Memorial there. The memorial marks the site where brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright experimented with flight in the early 1900s, and finally succeeded on a cold winter day with the world’s first controlled, sustained, powered, heavier-than-air flight.

At the visitor’s center you can learn about the Wright brothers, their glider experiments, and how they achieved their dreams on December 17, 1903. You can also take in an interpretive program on the brothers, examine the replicas of the 1902 glider and 1903 flyer, and see portraits of other famous aviators.

Exploring the grounds gives you an opportunity to see reproductions of the brothers’ 1903 camp buildings, stand at the place where Wilbur and Orville Wright first took to the air in their 1903 flyer and landed, and climb Big Kill Devil Hill to see the nation’s monument commemorating the brothers’ historic achievement.

Sounds like these good friends had a wonderful time together on their trip to North Carolina. We’re so humbled that they would take time out of their fun-filled trip to send us a postcard!
