Things we consider before we travel during the pandemic

by Steve and Ann | Jan 15, 2022 | Cruising, Feature Real Life, Feature Travel, Feature Wellness Travel, Real Life, Travel, Wellness Travel

To travel or not to travel during the pandemic? That is the question we’ve been asking ourselves a lot the past few weeks. And let’s face it – deciding whether or not to travel during this pandemic can be difficult.  Recently, we confronted the conundrum of...

Want to know how to avoid gaining weight on a cruise? Truth be told, we’ve been on 13 cruises and gained weight on nine of them. It wasn’t until we took the lessons we’d learned from the Noom app and the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program, that we figured out a way to...

Is cruising safe and will we cruise again?

by Steve | May 19, 2021 | Cruising, Feature Cruising, Feature Travel, Healthy Living, Travel, Wellness Travel

Is cruising safe and will you get on a cruise ship again? These are two questions we’ve been asked a lot lately, as we’ve begun our careful transition back into travel. As you may know, we’re big fans of cruising. We had just disembarked from our 13th cruise in...

Cruise ship etiquette: How to not get labeled “that (annoying) guy”

by Steve | Feb 9, 2020 | Cruising, Feature Cruising, Tips & Tricks, Travel

Sometimes people amaze me. On cruises, most folks understand good cruise ship etiquette. Sadly, it seems that each cruise also has “that guy” (or gal) who sucks away the fun just by being there. You know who I’m talking about, right? There’s...

❤️ Each year, many of us “Go Red for Women” in an effort to bring more awareness to heart disease and stroke. It’s with good cause. Heart disease is the No.1 killer of women—killing more than all forms of cancer combined. In fact, one in three women will die of heart disease and stroke each year. One in three!

Does go red for women stand for something? Yes, those letters each stand for something you can do to help reduce your risk of heart disease and build awareness. According to the American Heart Association, here’s what the letters G-O-R-E-D stand for.

❤️G: Get your numbers

Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure and cholesterol. If you haven’t had a wellness check in more than a year, make an appointment today and ask for these routine tests to be done.

❤️O: Own your lifestyle

It’s up to you. No one can make a lifestyle change for you. Reduce your risks by not smoking and maintaining a reasonable weight. Look for opportunities to move more, exercise, and eat healthy. I got on a bicycle last year for the first time in 15 years. You know what, it felt pretty good.

❤️R: Realize your risk

We think it won’t happen to us, but heart disease kills one of three women. Until heart disease happened to me, I never thought much about it. When I was diagnosed with my first heart-related illness in my 40s, that all changed. Now, I realize my risks and try to make lifestyle decisions that are good for my heart health.

❤️E: Educate your family

Make healthy food choices for you and your family. If you’re a parent, teach your kids the importance of staying active and eating healthy.

❤️D: Don’t be silent

Tell every woman you know that heart disease is our No. 1 killer. Guide other women to local resources and encourage your friends to make appointments for preventative care.

We want you here with us for a long time! I’m going to focus more this year on reducing stress, moving more, and making heart-healthy food choices. I hope you’ll join me. ❤️

-Ann

Need a little healthy living motivation? The phot Need a little healthy living motivation?

The photo on the left was taken at the Blue Canoe in Tupelo, Miss., Jan. 22, 2019. It was about two months before Ann and I started our healthy living journey. The photo on the right was taken at the same place last week - Jan. 27, 2023.

In both photos, I'm about to enjoy one of my favorite desserts of all time - the Blueberry Donut Bread Pudding, made with Tupelo's famous Connie's blueberry donuts. It's a (deserving) five-time winner of the Best Dessert in Mississippi.

Despite the photos being similar, a lot has changed for me over the four years, five days between pictures.

On the left, I had already enjoyed a Smash Burger with everything: double patty burger topped with lettuce, tomato, and pickles. It also had cheddar, Swiss, and provolone cheeses as well as grilled onion, green pepper, fresh jalapeños, bacon, gravy, and a fried egg. Of course, it was served with french fries covered in the Blue Canoe's famous Crack Dip (a spicy sausage & cheese dip). I cleaned my plate of every last delicious morsel and washed it all down with a tall, cold beer. Then, I devoured that mug of warm, gooey bread pudding.

On the right, I had just enjoyed a more reasonable burger and didn't finish it or the fries. I had a big glass of water instead of beer.

You see, over the past four years, I've come to realize that I don't need to eat everything on my plate. Instead, I eat until I am satisfied. I plan ahead and savor every bite. I am mindful of what I'm consuming and I enjoy it without guilt.

Having kept off my 70-pound weight loss for more than three years now, I've come to understand that no food is bad, so long as it's eaten in moderation. Now, I make a plan, stick to it, and enjoy my meals.

And you better believe that whenever we're in Tupelo, I'm going to order that blueberry donut bread pudding. But I can now skip the extra crack dip.

🥣 After traveling, isn’t it nice to come home 🥣 After traveling, isn’t it nice to come home to a nice homemade meal?

After being on the road for more than a month, it was such a relief to come home to a freezer, full of homemade and low-calorie soups like the ones pictured here - vegetarian taco soup, creamy cauliflower soup, and a hearty beef and barley soup.

All we had to do was take one of our frozen soups out of the freezer, defrost, and heat! The soups have made for quick and easy meals after busy days, and are so tasty and comforting.

All of these soups and several more are available in our “12 Low-Calorie and Delicious Soup Recipes” e-Book. It is available for purchase at the link in our bio @postcardjar. Your eBook includes tips for cooking low-calorie soups, nutritional information, as well as both digital download and printable versions.

Get your eBook today and be sure to let us know which low-calorie soup is your favorite!

Daiquiris for lunch you ask? We’re at the beach, Daiquiris for lunch you ask? We’re at the beach, so it’s always acceptable. Plus, we included non-alcoholic versions in our flight so we kept things reasonable.

@high_tide_daiquiris_mimosas offers a wide variety of delicious daiquiris, sandwiches, and beautiful charcuterie boards that you can even get to go.

We loved that they served a Daiquiri Flight in which you can choose four different flavors of daiquiris you’d like to try. Pick your favorite, then take a 16 oz bag of it to go. That’s right, bag—which is the perfect way to bring a daiquiri to the beach.

You can also get breakfast at this restaurant as well as delicious coffees. In fact, they offer an iced coffee flight, as well.

We loved this little family-owned restaurant and their philosophy that you should be able to try a little bit of everything. Best of all, the owners, Laura and Scott, are friendly, welcoming, and excited to share a little taste of beach paradise with you.

We enjoyed breakfast this week at The Southern Gri We enjoyed breakfast this week at The Southern Grind Coffee House at INDIGO. The baristas there made us a skinny latte, and we found some healthy breakfast items on the menu. That said, the portions are large, so we could have split one meal between the two of us and been very happy for breakfast.

The coffee shop also has great home decor, jewelry, gift items, and devotionals.

Have you been to a @thesoutherngrind_coffeehouse? What’s your favorite order?
